My first scarf

Like I mentioned in the previous post, I fell in love with crochet when I was making a scarf project in late 2022. However, I attempted to make it with knitting originally.

I had always wanted to knit a scarf since 4th or 5th grade since there were quite a few knitters around me, including my friends and their moms. That makes knitting a very cool and awesome skill to me.

Like all my other hobbies, I tried and failed several times with knitting over the years. I can never finish knitting one single item (not even a few rows) and it was way too challenging. In late 2022, I decided to try again and hopefully I can finish knitting a scarf for myself. You could say that I was determined to succeed.

It was a holiday and I reserved the whole afternoon and evening for the scarf project. I watched a tutorial video on YouTube and started with the casting on. It took me a while but I finally started with the first row. I made sure I did everything slowly but still, I made a mistake. Instead of undoing the mistaken stitches, I frog everything and start from the very beginning. For those who are familiar with knitting, you may wonder why I had to redo everything. The truth is, I have no idea how to undo only the mistaken stitches. I got confused and lost count with the stitch number if I frog any particular stitches.

You may have guessed the result. Even though I was so determined and put my very best effort into this, I eventually spent three hours of the casting on and knitting, and the farthest I could go without making any mistakes was 3 rows. I was literally a master of casting on by then haha. I finally came to realise that it’s impossible for me to finish a whole scarf without making any mistakes, unless I figure out how to undo the mistaken stitches. After a debate with myself, I ended up with a conclusion that knitting and I were simply not meant to be.

However, I didn’t want to give up the idea of making a scarf. It was the moment when I thought of crochet. I started to search on YouTube to see if I could find any tutorials about how to crochet a scarf. I remembered how shocked I was as I didn’t know that so many different items can be made with crochet. I seriously thought that it’s only for amigurumi. After watching the video, I decided to give it a go, since I have a bit experience with crochet and it looks pretty easy for me.

The scarf worked up pretty fast and I finished it on the following day. However, it was too short for me since I ran out of yarn. I bought the yarn during a warehouse sale so it was impossible for me to buy more of the same yarn. I ended up gifting it to a family member. I was still a beginner at that time so I didn’t know much about choosing the right yarn and deciding the amount of yarn needed. Although it didn’t turn out the way I planned, I did finish making a scarf by myself. It felt so good to finally reach a goal that I’ve been lowkey hoping to achieve over the years. I was surprised how I didn’t realise the whole time that I could’ve tried with crochet. That made me wonder what more I can do with crochet. That’s the beginning of my passionate crochet journey.

P.S. I’ve been keeping a crochet project journal since then and I finished 50 projects in 2023! I know that’s quite a lot. You know how I’m madly in love with crochet now haha : ) It’s amazing how much differences a hobby can make if it truly suits you!
